About Rutinea
Rutinea is an online Spanish practice platform created by the teachers behind El Patio Spanish School in Edinburgh. It brings years of classroom experience into a guided routine designed to help adults keep learning, practising and making progress.
Why we built Rutinea
For years, we watched motivated adults make real progress in our Spanish classes. But between lessons — or when work, family and everyday life became busy — keeping Spanish going was much harder.
The problem was rarely a lack of motivation. Learners had books, apps, notes and good intentions. What they often lacked was a clear, manageable way to know what to practise and keep building on what they had already learned.
We created Rutinea to provide that structure: a guided Spanish routine that helps adults practise consistently, use their time well and keep moving forward.
Our approach
Rutinea starts with what we have learned from teaching Spanish to adults: progress needs direction, regular practice and opportunities to reconnect with what you have already learned.
We use technology to make that easier — to guide your next step, adapt practice to the time you have available and help you see how your Spanish is developing.

The people behind Rutinea
Rutinea was created by the team behind El Patio Spanish School, which has been teaching adults in Edinburgh since 2013. Together, we bring over 15 years of experience in teaching Spanish, developing learning materials and supporting adult learners. That experience — and what students have shown us about what helps them keep going — continues to shape Rutinea.
Co-founder – Product and Pedagogy
Óscar leads product development at Rutinea, bringing together its pedagogical direction and the platform’s functional and technical design. As a co-founder of El Patio, he has led its academic development and helped shape its approach to teaching Spanish. Originally trained in drama, he later trained to teach Spanish as a foreign language, combining classroom experience, communication and learning design.
Co-founder – Learning and Curriculum
Verónica leads the development of learning pathways and materials at Rutinea, while also contributing to its marketing and social media. At El Patio, she develops curricula and teaching materials for face-to-face and online classes, supports students and coordinates teachers. She holds a degree in Psychology specialising in Education and is a certified teacher of Spanish as a foreign language, with previous experience as an educational counsellor and as a teacher of English and Spanish.
Co-founder – Business and Operations
Rubén leads business operations at Rutinea and contributes to its marketing strategy. He has overseen the direction and day-to-day management of El Patio, combining practical experience running a Spanish school with an academic background in business and corporate social responsibility, as well as training in teaching Spanish as a foreign language.
What began with the students we taught at El Patio has grown into a guided way to practise Spanish wherever you are. Rutinea brings together teaching experience, purposeful technology and a routine designed to help you keep going.
