Who we are.
Three founders with 15 years of experience teaching Spanish. Rutinea comes out of El Patio Spanish School in Edinburgh, where more than 250 students walk through our doors every week.
We built Rutinea because we kept watching motivated people stall. Not for lack of effort, but for lack of a routine. So we turned what works in our classrooms into something you can do in 20 minutes a day.

Rutinea is an online Spanish course that gives you a daily routine instead of a content library. You open it and today’s session is already there: a piece of grammar, some vocabulary, a short audio and something to read, sized to the time you have. It was built by the teachers of a Spanish school in Edinburgh, not by a games studio.
The team at El Patio, an independent Spanish school that has been teaching adults in Edinburgh since 2013. More than 250 students come through the classrooms every week. Rutinea is what we kept telling them to do between lessons, turned into something they can actually follow at home.
El Rutinante is the part of Rutinea that decides what you study next. It reads your level, the minutes you have today and what you have already covered, and builds the session for you. When you improve, it moves on. When you disappear for two weeks, it picks you up where you were instead of starting you over.
No. Apps give you exercises and leave the planning to you, which is the part that breaks. Rutinea removes the daily decision: there is one route, it is built by teachers, and it goes from your first words to B2. No streaks, no leagues, no notifications designed to make you feel guilty.
Duolingo is very good at getting you started and keeping you tapping. Where people get stuck is the jump from recognising Spanish to using it, and that needs grammar explained properly, longer listening and reading in context. That is where Rutinea begins. Plenty of our students use both, and that is fine.
Yes. The route starts from zero, with grammar videos that assume you know nothing and vocabulary you will use in the first week. If you would rather check before you start, there is a two-minute level test. And if you skip it, El Rutinante adjusts as you go.
This is who it works best for. Coming back is harder than starting, because you half-remember things and you do not know what is missing. The route lets you begin above zero, revise what is still there and fill the gaps, without sitting through six weeks of introductions you already know.
Yes, and it was designed for that. Most of our first users are people who go to a weekly lesson and then do nothing until the next one. Rutinea covers the six days in between, so you arrive at class having actually practised rather than having meant to.
Between 15 and 30 minutes, and you tell Rutinea which. A 15-minute day is a real day: shorter, not lighter. What matters is that you come back tomorrow, which is why the session is small enough to finish on a bad evening.
